Sarawak Targets Initial Export Of 1GW Power To Singapore By 2032
KUCHING: Sarawak aims to begin exporting 1 Gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy to Singapore by 2032, once the construction of the undersea cable is fully completed.
According to Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, the construction of the undersea cable will be carried out by a financial consortium in which both Malaysia and Singapore have interests.
“This will be one of the first and rather extraordinary projects in the Asia-Pacific region as it involves the transmission of electricity from Sarawak through an undersea cable. This cable will be developed by a consortium with shared interests from both Singapore and Malaysia, and the financing will also be provided by the consortium and financial institutions.
“Earlier, I also held discussions with the Singaporean Minister on how we plan to implement this project. Alhamdulillah, everything appears to be well managed, and I would like to express my gratitude to the Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) team who raised several technical issues that have since been resolved with our counterparts in Singapore,” he said.
He was speaking to UKAS and TVS reporters after delivering his keynote address at the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2025 Summit held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands, on Monday.
The Premier added that this is among the largest projects in the Asia-Pacific region, with Sarawak and Malaysia playing key roles alongside Singapore.
“If this succeeds, and I believe it will set a precedent for us to export power across ASEAN, with Sarawak playing a vital role,” he explained.
In a recent statement, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) announced that the Sarawak–Singapore Power Grid Interconnection Project had received Conditional Approval (CA) from Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) on 17 October.
The CA marks a significant milestone towards strengthening regional energy security prospects while enhancing economic integration between neighbouring countries in the spirit of ASEAN cooperation.
With the issuance of the CA, the Sarawak–Singapore Power Grid Interconnection Project is recognised to have undergone initial assessments and been deemed technically and commercially viable.
It is now ready to move into the next phase, which involves obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals and licences for further project development.
Meanwhile, the Premier reaffirmed Sarawak’s commitment to realising the ASEAN Power Grid by sharing its surplus renewable energy with regional partners.
He said that Sarawak is already supplying electricity to West Kalimantan and will soon be connected via the grid to Sabah and Brunei Darussalam.
“In addition, we are investing through SEB in East Kalimantan, and with the grid network we are developing, Sarawak will become the energy hub for the entire island of Borneo,” the Premier added.
He further stated that Sarawak remains committed to serving as a major energy source for ASEAN through the production of clean and green energy from hydro, solar and biomass, with the goal of generating 10GW of electricity by 2030 and 15GW by 2035.
