Rachel Chan installed president of KK Advanced Toastmasters Club

KOTA KINABALU (Oct 19): Rachel Chan, a senior quantity surveyor and project coordinator, was installed as the 24th president of the Kota Kinabalu Advanced Toastmasters Club during the club’s 24th Installation Dinner on October 5 at Promenade Hotel.

The event, themed “World Wardrobe Festival,” was attended by about 150 members and guests and was officiated by guest of honour Division K director Major Kong Yu Kiong, with Area K2 director Frankie Chung present.

Walter Sundang Alex served as the organising chairman, while Dr Richard Gontusan played the role of Toastmaster of the Evening or Master of Ceremonies.

Alongside Rachel, the 2024-2025 Executive Committee was installed, which includes Immediate Past President and Secretary Dr Mexmollen Marcus, Vice President Education Dr Elizabeth Ong, Vice President Membership Ibranik Iskandarian Peter, Vice President Public Relations Walter Sundang Alex, Treasurer Faridah Suffian, and Sergeant At Arms Amir Aliff Amri, who was unable to attend.

The ceremony also recognised Abu Bakar Sheriff, Fatimah Yassin, Dr Gontusan and Adina Affendy as club advisors for the current term.

In her speech, Rachel introduced her theme for the term: “Be the Best Version of Yourself.” She emphasised that this theme encourages members to embrace challenges, welcome feedback, and continuously seek opportunities for growth.

The evening also celebrated the club’s achievements and the educational successes of its members.

Notably, under Dr Mexmollen Marcus’ leadership, the club received the President’s Distinguished Club award for the 2023-2024 term with 10 out 10 goals achieved, the highest recognition from Toastmasters International for excellence in communication and leadership.

Additionally, Adina Affendy was honoured as the Toastmaster of the Year for the same term.

To add to the festive atmosphere, Duncan Tubong, Dr Mexmollen Marcus and Jessel Yansalang entertained the crowd with lively performances.

Exciting lucky draws and games further enhanced the enjoyment of the evening.
