IDS Organises Community Service Programme for Elderly at Sri Pritchard Home
KOTA KINABALU, March 22 — The Sabah Institute for Development Studies (IDS) held a special community service programme at Sri Pritchard Old Folks Home in Kinarut last Thursday in conjunction with the holy month of Ramadan.
Led by IDS Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Dr Ramzah Dambul, the initiative formed part of the institute’s ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts to instill compassion and foster a spirit of volunteerism among its staff.
“As a research institution dedicated to policy development and social wellbeing, IDS has a role to play as a grassroots champion, committed to uplifting local communities,” Dr Ramzah said in a statement.
He explained that the programme aimed to raise awareness and empathy for the welfare of the elderly, strengthen teamwork among staff, and provide emotional support and practical assistance to those in need — in line with the humanitarian values emphasised during Ramadan.
Volunteers were divided into several teams to carry out various activities:
Team One conducted a spring-cleaning session to improve cleanliness and comfort both inside and around the premises.
Team Two offered personal grooming services, including haircuts for the residents.
Team Three engaged the elderly with interactive and cheerful activities to brighten their day and strengthen social connections.
As a gesture of care, IDS also contributed hygiene products and food items to the residents before concluding the visit.
“This programme is more than just a charitable initiative — it’s about building stronger community ties and reflecting our commitment to social wellbeing,” Dr Ramzah added.
He emphasised that holistic development goes beyond economic growth and policy — it must also encompass social care and inclusiveness.
“Ramadan is a time to show love and generosity, especially towards the elderly who are often overlooked. IDS remains committed to nurturing empathy within our team and supporting those in need,” he said.
IDS hopes this effort will inspire more organisations to engage in charitable work and promote a culture of volunteerism in Sabah, contributing to a more caring and connected society.
The programme also received support from various welfare sector stakeholders. Among those present were Jahidi Sahibin, Officer-in-Charge of Sri Pritchard, Hajan Salam, Deputy Principal of Sekolah Tunas Bakti Kota Kinabalu, and the IDS Volunteer Team.
