Ewon Launches Kundasang Modern Hawkers Centre with RM2.275 Million Allocation

KUNDASANG: Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the Kundasang Modern Hawkers Centre, worth RM2.275 million. The project is expected to be completed by June 2026 and will benefit 90 local entrepreneurs.

He said the project, under the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) through UDA Holdings Berhad in collaboration with the Ranau District Council, will be developed on a 1.5-acre site.

“When completed, it will feature various modern facilities including sales stalls, public toilets, a food court, storage spaces, and a surau (prayer room), providing comfort for both local and out-of-town hawkers and visitors.

“The construction of this centre is not just a physical project but a reflection of the government’s commitment to strengthening the grassroots economy, particularly for small traders, rural entrepreneurs, and micro-business owners,” he said.

Ewon made the remarks while officiating the groundbreaking ceremony of the Kundasang Modern Hawkers Centre here today.

He added that the project continues the concept of Tamu Desa introduced by KUSKOP, with improvements in design, modern facilities featuring local identity, and environmentally sustainable elements.

“Under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMKe-12), UDA, through the Malaysian Entrepreneur Hub (MEH) program, has been mandated to provide entrepreneurial infrastructure to strengthen the micro and hawker ecosystem across the country,” he said.

He expressed appreciation to the Ranau District Council for providing a strategic site and technical support at the district level.

“Special thanks also go to Bank Rakyat for being a strategic partner through the implementation of the Mikro-i Hawkers and Small Traders Scheme (MPPK 2.0) and the Bank Rakyat Outreach Program, which help facilitate financing and business digitalization.

“This reflects the spirit of the Whole of Government concept — a collaboration among the federal and state governments, agencies, and local authorities to create innovative solutions that deliver a significant impact for the people,” he said.

Ewon emphasized that synergy between government agencies and stakeholders must continue to ensure that development benefits truly reach rural communities, especially in Sabah and Sarawak.

He added that community development does not rely solely on infrastructure but requires a holistic approach encompassing access to financing, digitalization, and entrepreneurial training.

“With this comprehensive approach, hawkers in Kundasang and nearby areas can grow into competitive entrepreneurs and contribute to the district’s economic development.

“I hope the construction of this centre will act as a catalyst for local economic growth, increase household incomes, create job opportunities, and strengthen the rural tourism sector ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026),” he said.
