70 Orphans and Underprivileged Children from Merotai Receive New Raya Outfits
TAWAU, March 22 — A total of 70 orphans and underprivileged children (asnaf) from Merotai were treated to new Hari Raya clothes, thanks to a charitable initiative by Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (Harapan Rakyat).
The programme, organised for the first time, aimed to ease the financial burden of families while bringing festive joy to children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Harapan Rakyat Women’s Chief, Norazian Dumit, said the group was brought to Tawau town earlier in the day to choose their own Raya outfits, followed by a communal iftar at a local restaurant.
“Many of these children have never had the opportunity to buy new Raya clothes due to financial constraints. That’s why we felt it was important to run this programme,” said Norazian, who also serves as the GRS Women’s Coordinator for Zone 6A.
She explained that the idea was proposed to Harapan Rakyat President, Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah, who immediately agreed to fully sponsor the festive clothing and iftar meal.
“Our hope is that by sharing what we have, we can bring some happiness and relief to the children and families of Merotai as they prepare for Hari Raya Aidilfitri,” she added.
Among the recipients was 11-year-old Muhammad Amirul Aiman Anto, who expressed joy and gratitude at being able to buy new clothes for the upcoming celebration.
“Honestly, I’ve never had the chance to buy new Raya clothes before because my family couldn’t afford it. I’m really happy and thankful for today,” he said with a smile.
Erni Putri Nasri, 45, whose two children were selected for the programme, also shared her appreciation.
“I’m very thankful. This initiative really helps parents like us who are struggling to prepare for the festive season. The kids were overjoyed picking out their favourite colours,” she said.
The programme not only lifted spirits but also reinforced the spirit of giving and compassion during the holy month of Ramadan.
