3,095 electric meter tampering cases in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU (Feb 27): Sabah Electricity will continue to intensify monitoring and enforcement efforts against users who are still involved in tampering of its electric meter installations.

According to its Chief Operation Officer (COO) Mohd Yusmanizam Mohd Yusof, 3,095 cases of electric meter tampering involving domestic, commercial and industrial users were uncovered last year.

A total of 69 integrated operations have been carried out across the state of Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan, in collaboration with other enforcement agencies such as the Sabah Energy Commission (ECoS), the Energy Commission (ST), and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

As of February 2025, ECoS has taken nine cases to court for prosecution.

On 24 and 25 February 2025, Sabah Electricity and ECoS inspected five premises in Kota Kinabalu and Tuaran, suspected of tampering with electric meter installations.

Therefore, Sabah Electricity will seek to recover revenue losses as provided for in court.

Meter tampering is a serious offense, and those involved can be prosecuted under the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024 and the Electricity Supply Act 1990
